Have some hormones!

What does having some hormones mean?

Ross is very upset that his lesbian wife has left him. Joey comes up with his strip-joints advice. Which is also followed by

Joey: Have some hormones!
What is "have some hormones" phrase about? Is it some kind of idiom?

Hormones Joey is referring to are called testosterone. In men, testosterone is thought to regulate sex drive (libido), muscle mass and yeah the production of sperm. Joey sees the only way to work through the hurt feelings over a woman is to numb them with more women. In the 90-ies it was a matter of a joke if a sensitive guy like Ross wanted to process his sadness differently.

The advice itself  has a strange,  that is a bit hard to translate for my Russian ear. Yet there is a way to understand the joke. So there is a form of wishing things to a person one's talking to.

Say you are scared to ask a guy you like out, your friend may tell you:
- Have some courage!

Say you are mad at kids for pointing and laughing at your new hat, a friend may tell you:
- Have some humor!

Say you are Joey and in your opinion a friend needs to stop crying and man up, than you tell him:
- Have some hormones!

  1. That might mean:
Show us that you are fully developed sexually. This sentence would be similar to:
"Have a sense of humor." "Have courage." "Have some compassion."
The word have is being used in the imperative.

  2. ИМХО, тут нужно учитывать контекст. Джоуи предлагает Россу походить по стрип-клубам. А у любого нормального мужчины при взгляде на полуобнаженных (то и полностью) девушек начинают вырабатываться гормоны.

  4. Hi there! I am learning English and I love Friends. Sorry I haven't found a way to learn your posts efficiently, it seems the content is not ordered by seasons or episodes. Is there any way can do that?

s03e17 Chandler: No, Hymn 253: "His Eyes are on the Sparrow."

How is Chandler's reference to Hymn 253: "His Eyes are on the Sparrow" funny? Ross and Rachel just broke up. Rachel invites guys to a free event she has tickets to. They reject the invitation, because Ross had them reserved for that same night earlier. Rachel says that it's not a big deal and leaves. Everyone is upset especially Chandler. He lights up a cigarette even though he wasn't smoking for a year already. Someone knocks on a door and Chandler says: Chandler: That's great. With my luck, that's him. Phoebe:  Him? Ross? Chandler:  No, Hymn 253: "His Eyes are on the Sparrow." What is that with this hymn?
