Grilled-cheese fixings

Monica's 1st Thanksgiving as a host. She is only happy to make everyones dreams come true. And here she comes with Chandler's bag of holiday snacks, naming one after another:

- Chandler, got your traditional holiday feast. Tomato soup, grilled-cheese fixings and a family-size bag of Funyuns.

So I found out what tomato soup and Funyuns are, but I can't get what is "grilled-cheese fixings". What is it like? Google doesn't give me any picture!

  1. Fixings are side dishes. For grilled cheese they usually are onions, cucumbers, lettuce & other vegetables -http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/YHmXTp3TiTzuNWkGZYmHow?select=rV2Hj-0fxH-uZWC9dDcBFw#rV2Hj-0fxH-uZWC9dDcBFw

    2. Hey, thanks, Marina! If a side dish called fixings, so I assume it should derive from something like "fix the dish by putting together main dish and the side one".
And Loay, thank you for calling me back to this blog after a year break.

    3. Sorry to contradict Marina, but grilled cheese (at least in the US) is typically just cheese and bread, grilled so the bread becomes golden and toasted and the cheese melts.

Tomato is a somewhat common addition, and you can really add anything else you want, but the basic grilled cheese is just cheese.

  2. Fixin's is often how it's written/said. It's either the necessary ingredients for something (as it is here) or a collection of toppings and the like ("burger fixins" could be considered the patty and the bun, but also the lettuce, tomato, cheese, and pickles, none of which are required, but are usual burger ingredients). In this case, simply the ingredients needed for a grilled cheese: cheese and bread (and butter).

s03e17 Chandler: No, Hymn 253: "His Eyes are on the Sparrow."

How is Chandler's reference to Hymn 253: "His Eyes are on the Sparrow" funny? Ross and Rachel just broke up. Rachel invites guys to a free event she has tickets to. They reject the invitation, because Ross had them reserved for that same night earlier. Rachel says that it's not a big deal and leaves. Everyone is upset especially Chandler. He lights up a cigarette even though he wasn't smoking for a year already. Someone knocks on a door and Chandler says: Chandler: That's great. With my luck, that's him. Phoebe:  Him? Ross? Chandler:  No, Hymn 253: "His Eyes are on the Sparrow." What is that with this hymn?
