What does the phrase 'stop the Q-Tip when there's resistance' mean? Chandler needs new pants made and asks friends for a contact of a good tailor. Joey raises a hand - yep, he has a tailor. Chandler feels all set. But Joey starts to share way too much of boring detail. Joey : He did my first suit when I was 15... No, wait, 16... No, excuse me, 15... All right, when was 1990? Chandler : You have to stop the Q-Tip when there's resistance! What is Q-Tip? What is the whole "You have to stop the Q-Tip when there's resistance" expression is referring to? Apparently the joke was among few that Matthew Perry, the actor who played Chandler has improvised on the set. Also that is the joke some websites say that Matthew is the most proud of. So let's try and get it! Q-Tip is a cotton swabs brand name. You know the ones you use to clean your ears after a bath. Q here stands of "Quality". Americans say "Q-tip" but often mean not a particular

По поводу просто "capade". Думаю, что это "вырванная" часть словосочетания, не имеющая значения отдельно. Т.е. Джоуи платит за "ледяные capades", а Чендлер говорит, что раньше тот вообще ни за какие "capade" не платил.
То есть в смысле ни за что и никогда? А тут, мол, расслабился?
ReplyDeleteНу, не знаю, насколько "ни за что и никогда". У Джоуи, как известно, всегда было много женщин и мало денег. Тем более в самом начале сериала.

DeleteIt is a joke about Butt Sex. So according to Wiki in 1940 there was a ice skating show group with name "Ice Capades". It is formed on a play of sounds of those two words together. And Ice Capades will seem like the word "Escapades". Which basically means trick. That explains why "capades" was invented and why there is no any meaning of it in the dictionary.
Next part of a solutiion I found in Urban Dictionary. According to which "to go to the Ice Capades with somebody" in slang means:
"Having butt sex without any lube and not being able to sit down for a wonderful show like the ice capades."
Here Chandler's joke "I've never known you to pay for any kind of "capade". Become clear. Joey is going to take Phoebe's sister to the actual Ice Capades' Show. And Chandler
uses the opportunity to have fun saying practically: "wow! you've never payed for sex before, even if it is "ice capades".
Oh, my goodness! I never would have thought about it that way. This is certainly one way to interpret the joke.
ReplyDeleteThe Urban Dictionary is slanted toward very sexual and rude slang uses of phrases. Most of them are not in common use. Some of them I may hear on an uncensored Cable TV show, but I'll have to look up the meaning of the phrase online.
"Ice Capades" is a form of musical theater, usually for very young children. They take children's stories, dress up in big character costumes (like at Disney World), and perform the entire play on an ice rink, while wearing ice skates, singing and skating to the songs. This would be a very safe date for any woman, as a man is not likely to make sexual advances at a show where the audience is mostly young children. It is not likely that Joey would find this kind of show entertaining. The word "capade" is really not used outside of this phrase, so when Chandler says "any kind of capade" he is poking fun at Joey.
