How is Chandler's reference to Hymn 253: "His Eyes are on the Sparrow" funny? Ross and Rachel just broke up. Rachel invites guys to a free event she has tickets to. They reject the invitation, because Ross had them reserved for that same night earlier. Rachel says that it's not a big deal and leaves. Everyone is upset especially Chandler. He lights up a cigarette even though he wasn't smoking for a year already. Someone knocks on a door and Chandler says: Chandler: That's great. With my luck, that's him. Phoebe: Him? Ross? Chandler: No, Hymn 253: "His Eyes are on the Sparrow." What is that with this hymn?
As Yahoo! Answers user claims:
ReplyDeleteIt was just meant to be funny and show how clueless he was. At the time all you read about was OJ.

As for O.J. it is appeared to be some football player who back then had murdered his ex-wife and boyfriend and he was constantly on the news... So I guess Chandler simply doesn't know what to answer to Joey and just trying to disturb his attention. No real connection then.
ReplyDeleteI am open to all other oppinions about the matter)
Может быть, он говорит: "А не с того же самого начинал O.J.?" Т.е. начал открывать в себе новые уровни;))
ReplyDeleteChandler is simply trying to be funny here. The OJ case was household at that time; everyone, even children, had at least heard of the case and the trial. It is one of the most famous of all time, I would say. So, Chandler is just trying to be funny by pretending to not have noticed anything was "going on with OJ."
