Because she doesn't hate Yanni is not a real reason.

Guys are reprimanding Chandler for rejecting women over superficial, insignificant things. Ross:

- You name one woman that you broke up
with for an actual real reason.
Chandler:
- Maureen Rasillo.
Ross:
- Because she doesn't hate Yanni
is not a real reason.

...and auditorium laughs, which I don't get. Who is "Yanni"? Is that supposed to be someone everybody knows? What is fun about it?

  1. Wiki says that Yanni is a famous Greek misician. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yanni
Might is be the one? He could be popular back then.

  2. Yes, that is who they mean. Yanni was popular with fans of easy listening music, which neither Chandler nor Ross would find enjoyable. It was common to joke about him.

  3. No, the jokes is a classic comedy spin on things. Here Chandler is coming up with a real reason that he broke up with a girl and surprise joke that it was for a a totally pathetic reason. It's a really good joke. The tension is created by the situation, but mostly by the annoyed tone of Ross's response.

s03e17 Chandler: No, Hymn 253: "His Eyes are on the Sparrow."

How is Chandler's reference to Hymn 253: "His Eyes are on the Sparrow" funny? Ross and Rachel just broke up. Rachel invites guys to a free event she has tickets to. They reject the invitation, because Ross had them reserved for that same night earlier. Rachel says that it's not a big deal and leaves. Everyone is upset especially Chandler. He lights up a cigarette even though he wasn't smoking for a year already. Someone knocks on a door and Chandler says: Chandler: That's great. With my luck, that's him. Phoebe:  Him? Ross?
