Ross has refused to help Monica prepare food for the wedding of his former wife and her partner's wedding. But Monica is running late and pressures Ross and gets him to join everyboby in the kitchen.
Monica: All right, ball a melon!
Chandler: How come I'm stuck dicing when he gets to ball a melon?
After what sure enough audience laughs. Saying his line Chandler pauses and stresses the "melon" word out. Ross gives him a look of "what? why do you need to put it this way" sort. What was chndler inplying? Help.

Hi there! Your project is so cool and I mean it!
ReplyDeleteConsidering this episode, I think “balling the melon” means some kind of sexual activity, check this out http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Melon+Balling
And this is really from jerking off to having sex with a cantaloupe.
Ugh!!!
Anna, thank you! I should have thought about it. Sure it does sound sexual to me when you pointed it out)

ReplyDeleteI actually never thought there was any sexual implication behind this joke, though I could see how it could be given a sexual connotation (especially given Anna's link - ha!).
ReplyDeleteMy interpretation of this moment has always been that Chandler, for the sake of being funny, is just trying to stir up trouble by bemoaning his task of dicing as somehow being "worse" or "not as fun" as balling a melon, but they are really equally mundane kitchen chores.
