Phoebe: I mean, books, free speech, newspapers on sticks.

Phoebe's new boyfriend says to her that she can't play at the library anymore. This where Phoebe previously played her 'age inapropriate' songs to kids. She is upset now and takes it out on her guy.

Phoebe: I can't believe this is the library! I mean, books, free speech, newspapers on sticks.

Why would she mention "newspapers on sticks"? And how is it funny?

  1. The sticks for a Newspaper are 'designed to enhance the newspaper reading experience by keeping pages neat and tidy'. Here is a link to a picture:

But is that all what it is to the joke? Or there are more to get?

  2. Yeah, it's just sort of a quirky thing that only exists in libraries, and when you just refer to it plainly as "newspapers on sticks," its just sort of a funny image to conjure in itself. It's also a bit of an odd thing to put in her collection of "things from the library that make this situation galling." Books and free speech are sort of making her point, but "newspapers on sticks" kind of takes it off the rails in a Phoebe-ish way.

s03e17 Chandler: No, Hymn 253: "His Eyes are on the Sparrow."

How is Chandler's reference to Hymn 253: "His Eyes are on the Sparrow" funny? Ross and Rachel just broke up. Rachel invites guys to a free event she has tickets to. They reject the invitation, because Ross had them reserved for that same night earlier. Rachel says that it's not a big deal and leaves. Everyone is upset especially Chandler. He lights up a cigarette even though he wasn't smoking for a year already. Someone knocks on a door and Chandler says: Chandler: That's great. With my luck, that's him. Phoebe:  Him? Ross?
