s03e25 Chandler: Hi, I'm dorf! Your date for the evening.

Who is dorf? Why is dating him supposed to be funny?

Chandler is trying to convince Monica that he is good for dating. First she opens a door he trys a strange sexy voice. It's not working. The next time he couldn't come up with anything. And the third time Monica opens the door he stands on his knees saying:

Chandler: Hi, I'm dorf! Your date for the evening. (Monica walks away annoyed) Oh, come on! Dorf on dating, that's good stuff!!

Who is dorf? Why is dating him supposed to be funny?

Thank you for all your answers below! Let's sum it up now. During 80ies and early 90ies there were series of videos with a dorf as a main character:

  • Dorf on Golf (1987)
  • Dorf and the First Games of Mount Olympus (1988)
  • Dorf's Golf Bible (1988)
  • Dorf Goes Auto Racing (1990)
  • Dorf Goes Fishing (1993)
  • Dorf on the Diamond (1996)
  • Dorf's Christmas Specials (2009–2015)
  • Chip & Bernie Save Christmas with Dorf (2016)
Tim Conway, the comedian who has created the dorf character, would place his knees on shoes and thus play the role. Surely that lowering of the position would provide with lots of fun making opportunities. But why is it the dorf character that Chandler decides to refer to, while convincing Monica to date him? What would prompt that?

In those videos dorf either learns something new, or unsuccessfully performs in something he is supposedly good at. So in that episode Chandler who is not good at dating in general tries to do something he has never done, make Monica say that she could've date him. So when Chandler impersonates dorf, he is trying to say to Monica:

"Hey! I know I might be so NOT smooth with dating, that Tim Conway can literally make another episode with an awkward dorf trying to date, starring me. But at least I got the sense of humor to laugh at this awkwardness! It should be worth something on a dating market, right?"

And I have a guess why Monica didn't appreciate Chandler's dorf reference. See in the first four episodes of those dorf series there are only one woman. This famale character, who is played by Michele Smith, is always silent and named (pause) Boom Boom. So I don't think this dorf show was aiming to serve such audience as Monica and the reference to those series, just made her roll her eyes and walk away.

What do you think?

  1. According to wiki.answers http://bit.ly/1kXlCK0

Chandler is impersonating some comedian of tha time. He was aparently known as the one who would stand on his knees on shoes and tell jokes. They say if you google "dorf on" you'll see some clips. But for me it didn't work out, the only videos availible were on "dorf on golf", which were not the comic ones.

  2. Dorf in and of himself is intended to be an amusing character, mostly because of his stature. "Dorf on Golf" is really the only majoy Dorf video that I know of, but it was a bit before my time.

  3. Dorf is a character of the comedian Tim Conway (pretending to be a dwarf). He used to put some knee fake shoes and stand on it, so he could do strange movements and make some stories.
He used to put the titles of the scenes as "Dorf in ...".
So, Chandler just stood on his knees and made the joke... as we can see after the reaction of Monica it wasn't a popular success.

    1. Hey, Nada a Declarar! Thank you for the name to search. Now the range of videos on youtube of the Darf in much wider. They are as everything after 30 years seem a bit slow with its physucal humor. But also endearing)
For those who are interested here is Darf the Jockey one:

How is Chandler's reference to Hymn 253: "His Eyes are on the Sparrow" funny? Ross and Rachel just broke up. Rachel invites guys to a free event she has tickets to. They reject the invitation, because Ross had them reserved for that same night earlier. Rachel says that it's not a big deal and leaves. Everyone is upset especially Chandler. He lights up a cigarette even though he wasn't smoking for a year already. Someone knocks on a door and Chandler says: Chandler: That's great. With my luck, that's him. Phoebe:  Him? Ross? Chandler:  No, Hymn 253: "His Eyes are on the Sparrow." What is that with this hymn?
