Chandler: I thought if I littered, that crying Indian might come by and save us

The guys are stuck in a wild with keys locked in a car. No one is around to help. Chandlers throughs out an empty cigarette pack on the ground. The rest of a group protests, but Chandler explains:

Chandler: I thought if I littered, that crying Indian might come by and save us.

Why would he think that? Who is that "crying indian"?

  1. Ok, that one was easy to find an answer to. So in 70ies there was that commercial about native American puddling on his canoe through the rivers of garbige people through away. And in the end of this ad he is turning his face to a camera and we can see that there is a tear in one of his eyes. So this image was very much popularaized and luaghed at in different media. And here Chandler is suggesting if he litters than the Indian is probably going to be on his way soon.

Here you can see the ad:

s03e17 Chandler: No, Hymn 253: "His Eyes are on the Sparrow."

How is Chandler's reference to Hymn 253: "His Eyes are on the Sparrow" funny? Ross and Rachel just broke up. Rachel invites guys to a free event she has tickets to. They reject the invitation, because Ross had them reserved for that same night earlier. Rachel says that it's not a big deal and leaves. Everyone is upset especially Chandler. He lights up a cigarette even though he wasn't smoking for a year already. Someone knocks on a door and Chandler says: Chandler: That's great. With my luck, that's him. Phoebe:  Him? Ross? Chandler:  No, Hymn 253: "His Eyes are on the Sparrow." What is that with this hymn?
