Rachel: Was it how you invented the cotton gin?

Ross has a white costume with a bow tie on. He comes to girls place to tell them something. But girls interrupt him commenting on his suit.

Monica: I like it on you even more than I did on Colonel Sanders (Ross turns to leave) Ross! I'm kidding come here. What were you gonna tell us?
Rachel: Was it how you invented the cotton gin?
Ross: Okay, goodbye.

I understand that in this white suit and a bow tie Ross looks like a typical image of Fridays inventor Colonel Sanders. But how is this costume relates to "cotton gin" invention?

  1. It is like they're saying that he just invented the cotton gin and then made the suit he's wearing, implicating that his suit is so vintage in style like the style people were wearing at the cotton gin's era.

    1. Oh, now it is all clear, thank you! Am I guessing right that it is a pattern for this kind of joke? I mean saying that you have invented something just to imply that the thing you discussing is very old.

  2. She's just saying that Ross looks out of style. She does this by referencing a popular American historical event from 300 years ago, the invention of the cotton gin by Eli Whitney in the 1700s.
