Did you notice that about 7% of F.R.I.E.N.D.S jokes are hard to get? Especially if you are from a different country, like me. I've started this joke-research when I was learning English at home. I loved getting nerdy with all the cultural references here. The goal of this blog is to help you laugh with confidence at every joke our English speaking friends make. Explore the blog posts via tags and share your perspective on the jokes! Katia
Q: What does "Pay the piper" mean?
ReplyDeleteA: To pay the consequences for self-indulgent behavior: “If you stay up late at night to watch TV, in the morning you will have to pay the piper.” In our case that is Rachel and Monica agree to play the guess game and now when they have lost they have to pay the price.

By the way that saying might have two possible origins.
ReplyDelete1: The English saying "he who pays the piper calls the tune". It says that the one who pays for lets say a cake to be made gets to choose the icing on its top.
2. Or the proverb may take roots in an 13th century German legend. The one called Pied Piper. According to the story a brightly dressed man saved a town of Hamelin from rats. He walked them out and straight into a near river with a music of his magic flute. But mayor of Hamelin refused to pay. The angry Pied Piper took revenge on him by making 130 children follow his magic flute and walking them out of town. According to the legend kids were never seen again.
