Ross: Standard shotgun rules

Guys are moving into girls' apartment.

Joey blurts out:
- I call Monica's room!
Chandler:
- You can't just call Monica's room.
Joey:
- Sure I can. Standard shotgun rules.

What are shotgun rules? What situations would they normally be used in?

  1. The term takes you to a Wild West America. Imagine horse carriage ready for a ride. What place would you call if you could? The one inside a coach? The one of a coachman himself? Or the one besides the "driver"? Taking the last place would be called "riding the shotgun". Yes, applying a shotgun in case of attack for those passangers was a must.
These days when couches are less popular, people moved the term "shotgun" to cars. In fact there is a game among groups of friends (attention!). If you say "shotgun!" in time you get to ride at a front seat by the driver.

The rules on when and how that shotgun-front-seat thing works are beyond imaginable. Take a look here:

s03e17 Chandler: No, Hymn 253: "His Eyes are on the Sparrow."

How is Chandler's reference to Hymn 253: "His Eyes are on the Sparrow" funny? Ross and Rachel just broke up. Rachel invites guys to a free event she has tickets to. They reject the invitation, because Ross had them reserved for that same night earlier. Rachel says that it's not a big deal and leaves. Everyone is upset especially Chandler. He lights up a cigarette even though he wasn't smoking for a year already. Someone knocks on a door and Chandler says: Chandler: That's great. With my luck, that's him. Phoebe:  Him? Ross? Chandler:  No, Hymn 253: "His Eyes are on the Sparrow." What is that with this hymn?
