Why is Limoges gravy boat that exciting to Rachel?
It is the very beginning of the show. The scene is about introduction of Rachel as a character. Rachel runs into Central Perk in a wedding dress and bumps into Monica and her friends. Now when she has ordered her coffee, she starts to tell her run away from the wedding story. Why writers would choose for Rachel to start the story from some Limoges gravy boat?
Limoges is a town in France, where French masters have been working on porcelain dinnerware for over 250 years. Limoges gravy boats are pretty, expensive and lets face it not too practical. The line reveals Rachel’s a bit superficial taste for all things luxury. It gives Rachel the air of a spoiled girl.
Also in slang gravy means “money easily received”. That is how Rachel sees Barry - a fancy doctor with loads of cash to take care of the future wife’s needs. But suddenly Rachel craves not just gravy, but butterflies in her stomach.
