s01e01 Joey: Of course it was a line!

What other lines exist in the US dating culture?

Monica has just found out that Paul, the wine guy, she just slept with last night, has lied to her. Apparently Paul uses the same sad divorce story to butter up every girl he is going out with. Monica is terribly upset. How could she fall for it? Paul felt so sincere! How could this complex vulnerable story be a line? Joey doesn't help.

Joey: Of course it was a line!

What is a line? Is there a special list of lines for dating in America?

A line is a tried and true string of words, that give the speaker something they desire. Usually when you say 'what a line!' you are talking about dating world. So I wonder what other lines are out there we need to be on a look out of?

Here I should say that mostly people use lines, when they are only about to get a date. And these are a few examples I found:

- I’d say God Bless you, but it looks like he already did.

- I’m going to have to ask you to leave, because you’re making everyone in here look bad.

- Are you single? Because I need a plus one to literally everything for the rest of my life.

I should admit, that never have I ever had any of those pick up lines used on me at my home country. Well, maybe it is my little dating experience or maybe the pickup lines aren't as popular outside of US. What do you think?

s03e17 Chandler: No, Hymn 253: "His Eyes are on the Sparrow."

How is Chandler's reference to Hymn 253: "His Eyes are on the Sparrow" funny? Ross and Rachel just broke up. Rachel invites guys to a free event she has tickets to. They reject the invitation, because Ross had them reserved for that same night earlier. Rachel says that it's not a big deal and leaves. Everyone is upset especially Chandler. He lights up a cigarette even though he wasn't smoking for a year already. Someone knocks on a door and Chandler says: Chandler: That's great. With my luck, that's him. Phoebe:  Him? Ross? Chandler:  No, Hymn 253: "His Eyes are on the Sparrow." What is that with this hymn?
